CBD hot chocolate: the homemade recipe and the right dose
Par The Phytogrammes team ·
A CBD hot chocolate is made like any classic recipe, then enriched with a dose of CBD oil added off the heat, once the drink has cooled below 70 °C, so as to protect as far as possible the cannabinoids that are sensitive to prolonged heat.

Why the oil goes in last
CBD degrades progressively above 70 °C, particularly with prolonged exposure. Boiling the milk with the CBD oil straight in the pan therefore exposes the molecule to a needless loss of potency. The most reliable method is to make the hot chocolate as normal, then stir the oil in once the drink has come off the heat and cooled slightly.
Ingredients for two cups
Allow 40 cl of milk, or a plant-based drink, 60 g of dark chocolate, grated or in buttons, a teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa to deepen the flavour, and an amount of CBD oil adjusted to the bottle's concentration and to your own tolerance. A pinch of cinnamon or vanilla can round out the recipe to taste.
Step by step
Heat the milk gently without letting it boil, then add the grated chocolate and the cocoa, whisking until the texture is smooth. Take the pan off the heat and leave it to cool for a few minutes, until the drink drops below 70 °C. Now add the CBD oil, stir briskly to disperse it through the chocolate's fat, which helps it be taken up, then pour into the cups.
Dosing without going overboard
Start with a small amount of oil, and adjust next time if need be. Share the total dose out evenly if you are making several cups, and note the quantity used so you can estimate the content per cup. If you are sharing the drink, always tell your guests that it contains CBD.
The legal framework for CBD drinks in France
Drinks intended to be ingested fall under novel food status at European level. Since 15 May 2026, the DGAL has been withdrawing from the market CBD food products that lack Novel Food authorisation. A homemade preparation for strictly personal use, made from an oil already in your possession, is not the same thing as putting a product on the market, but it is still worth asking the supplier of the oil used for a certificate of analysis.
Precautions
CBD is not a medicine, and a CBD hot chocolate should not be the subject of any promise of guaranteed wellbeing. This preparation is not advised for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for minors. If you are undergoing medical treatment, ask your doctor's advice before consuming CBD orally on a regular basis.
Frequently asked questions
Can the milk be boiled with the CBD oil straight in?
That is not recommended. Prolonged exposure above 70 °C progressively degrades CBD. It is better to add it once the drink has cooled, off the heat.
How long does a CBD hot chocolate keep?
Ideally it is drunk straight after being made. In the fridge, allow 24 hours at most, reheating gently without going above 70 °C so as not to degrade the CBD further.
Can you buy a ready-made CBD hot chocolate in France?
No, with rare exceptions: ingestible CBD drinks have been withdrawn from the market since May 2026 for want of Novel Food authorisation. Any preparations still on sale are non-compliant.
How do you estimate the CBD dose per cup?
Divide the total amount of oil used by the number of cups made, sharing the dose out evenly between each portion.
