How to go without tobacco in a joint: the alternatives
Par The Phytogrammes team ·
Rolling a joint without tobacco means replacing the tobacco with a larger quantity of flower, a blend of smokable herbs, or changing the method of consumption altogether with a vaporiser. The tobacco-cannabis combination, common in France and in Europe, adds nicotine and the substances produced by burning tobacco to those of cannabis.

Why tobacco ends up in a joint
The habit of mixing tobacco and cannabis historically comes from an economic use: tobacco bulks out the quantity of material and makes a joint burn more evenly. Technically, this mixture is in no way compulsory: it stems from a cultural convention specific to certain European countries, unlike North American practice where the "pure" joint is the norm.
Rolling with flower alone
The most direct solution consists in using flower only, finely ground with a grinder for an even burn. This method requires a little more material and slightly different handling for the joint to hold together well, but it avoids combining nicotine and the recognised carcinogenic substances produced by burning tobacco, documented by Santé publique France, with the consumption of light cannabis.
Smokable herbal blends
Some specialist shops offer blends of herbs free from tobacco and nicotine, based on damiana, sage, lemon balm or other dried herbs, intended to replace the volume that tobacco used to provide in a traditional joint. These blends have no demonstrated therapeutic property and serve above all as a neutral burning medium.
The vaporiser, an alternative without combustion
A vaporiser heats the flower below the point of combustion, generally between 160 and 220 °C, which releases the cannabinoids and terpenes as a vapour without producing smoke or the substances generated by high-temperature combustion. This method removes the tobacco question by design, since it requires no additional burning medium. To get started with this type of equipment, see our guide to useful CBD accessories.
What this change does not alter legally
Removing tobacco from a joint changes nothing about the legal status of its contents. Only a hemp product complying with the 0.30% THC threshold in the finished product remains authorised in France; cannabis with a high THC content remains a narcotic, with or without tobacco added.
Why the change still matters for health
Burning tobacco releases recognised carcinogenic substances, whatever product it is combined with. Removing tobacco from a joint does not make cannabis smoke harmless, but it does remove an additional source of toxic substances and the risk of nicotine dependence specific to tobacco.
Frequently asked questions
Why do so many people in France mix tobacco and cannabis?
It is a cultural habit inherited from economical rolling, which bulks out the material and makes it burn more easily. It is not shared by every consuming country.
Is a tobacco-free joint rolled differently?
Yes, it requires more finely ground flower and sometimes a wider paper or a suitable filter in order to hold together properly as it burns.
Does a vaporiser completely replace a joint?
It changes the method of consumption by avoiding combustion, but it remains a use in its own right, to be chosen according to your preferences rather than imposed.
Does smoking a tobacco-free joint remove all risk?
No. Burning any plant material produces substances that still warrant attention. Removing tobacco eliminates nicotine and its own compounds, not the whole set of risks linked to combustion.
