Storing your CBD flower: humidity, light and temperature

A hemp flower degrades along three routes: light, oxygen and heat. The only public normative reference on its moisture content is standard ASTM D8197, which sets a water activity of between 0.55 and 0.65. An airtight, opaque container, kept cool, and a flower never ground in advance: that is what comes closest to the conditions measured as favourable.

Light, the leading cause of loss

The reference work on the question dates from 1976. Published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, it concluded that exposure to light is the leading cause of cannabinoid loss, including away from direct sunlight. The authors judged the effect of temperature, up to 20°C, to be of little significance, whereas oxidation in air led to clear losses.

Two practical lessons follow. First, the opacity of the container matters more than what it is made of. Second, a transparent jar sitting on a lit shelf is the worst possible storage, even in a cool room.

Humidity: what the standard actually says

You will often read that a flower should be kept at between 55 and 62% relative humidity. That figure circulates widely, but it corresponds to the specifications of commercial humidity-control sachets, not to a scientific reference.

The only normative reference is standard ASTM D8197, which specifies for dried flower a water activity of between 0.55 and 0.65, that is an equilibrium relative humidity of 55 to 65% in a closed container. The upper bound is intended to prevent mould from developing; the lower bound, to stop the flower crumbling at the slightest touch.

In other words, the useful range is wider than the marketing suggests, and its stakes are twofold: neither too damp, nor too dry.

Cold slows things down, heat speeds them up

A study published in 2020 in Frontiers in Plant Science followed inflorescences and extracts stored in the dark at four temperatures, from minus 80°C to 25°C, for a year. Its conclusion is clear-cut: storage at 25°C produces the greatest variations in concentration and is the least favourable temperature, while 4°C emerges as the optimal condition after harvest.

The same work gives a telling order of magnitude for extracts: at twelve months, the average loss was around 22% at 4°C against 85% at 25°C. Temperature is therefore not a detail of convenience, but a first-order factor over time.

On the dry form, a 2021 study in Pharmaceutics adds a useful nuance: CBD powder remains statistically unchanged for 270 days at 25°C, whereas the same CBD dissolved in an oil loses close to 42% in a year. Terpenes leave before cannabinoids

This is the point most guides omit. In the 2020 study cited above, the average terpenoid concentration had fallen by more than 50% after four months, while the phytocannabinoids lost on average only 26% after twelve months.

In practice, a flower can retain most of its stated content while having lost half of its scent. If the aroma has faded, that is not necessarily the sign of a product past use: it is the most volatile fraction that has gone first. Do not grind in advance

Still in the same work, the ground samples degraded more than the whole buds, because of a far larger surface exposed to air. The most rewarding storage habit is therefore the simplest: keep the flower whole and prepare it only at the moment of use.

One clarification, finally, on a widespread confusion. The 2021 study on CBD stability identified CBN among the degradation products, but detected no THC. CBD does not turn into THC as it ages, contrary to what some forums claim. A glass container that is opaque or kept away from light, tightly sealed, in a cool and stable place, with the flower left whole: those four points cover the essentials of what the literature measures. Should CBD flowers be kept in the fridge?

The 2020 study on post-harvest stability identifies 4°C as the optimal condition for whole inflorescences. The practical constraint is condensation: a container taken out of the cold must return to room temperature before being opened, failing which the moisture that settles on it cancels out the benefit sought.

Does CBD turn into THC over time?

No. The stability study published in 2021 in Pharmaceutics followed the degradation of CBD for a year and detected no THC among the products formed. CBN, by contrast, was identified. The conversion of CBD into THC stems from a confusion with chemical reactions induced in an acidic medium, which have nothing to do with storage at home.
