Hemp terpenes: role, chemistry and presence in CBD

Terpenes are aromatic molecules that most plants synthesise — lemon, lavender, pine, rosemary, and hemp. In a full-spectrum CBD extract, more than 200 terpenes coexist alongside the cannabinoids. Their synergistic role with CBD remains a hypothesis still under scientific investigation.

Hemp terpenes: role, chemistry and presence in CBD

You came across terpenes this morning without knowing it: a squeezed lemon zest, a sprig of lavender, orange peel, pine needles rubbed between your fingers. These volatile molecules give each plant its characteristic scent. In hemp, they form a distinct chemical profile, but they are not the main active component of CBD products.

What are terpenes?

Terpenes are a class of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by most plants. Chemically, they derive from isoprene units (C5H8) assembled into monoterpenes (C10), sesquiterpenes (C15) or diterpenes (C20). Their volatility explains why you can smell them: they evaporate at room temperature and reach your olfactory receptors.

Hemp synthesises its terpenes in the trichomes, the microscopic resinous glands visible on the flowers and leaves. The same trichomes produce the cannabinoids (CBD, CBG, THC): terpenes and cannabinoids are therefore chemically co-extracted in a full-spectrum oil.

Why do plants produce terpenes?

From the plant's point of view, terpenes fulfil several functions documented in chemical ecology:

  • Attracting pollinators (bees, butterflies, bumblebees) through targeted olfactory signals.
  • Repelling predators (plant-eating insects, certain herbivores).
  • Defence against pathogens: some terpenes show antifungal or antibacterial activity in in vitro assays.
  • Thermal protection: releasing terpenes helps cool the plant through evaporation.

These functions belong to plant physiology and do not transpose mechanically to the human body.

The main terpenes found in hemp

Of the more than 200 terpenes identified in hemp, around ten are present at significant concentrations. Profiles vary according to the variety (chemotype), growing conditions (light, soil, climate) and extraction methods.

Myrcene. The most abundant in most varieties. Herbaceous, slightly musky note. Also present in hops, mango and thyme.

Limonene. Citrus note, fresh. Found in lemon and orange zest.

Linalool. Floral, sweet note. The main component of lavender essential oil.

Pinene (alpha and beta). Pine and resin note. Found in conifers and rosemary.

Beta-caryophyllene. Spicy, peppery note. Found in black pepper and clove. A chemical peculiarity: it interacts with the CB2 receptor of the endocannabinoid system, which makes it one of the few terpenes described as "cannabinoid-like".

Humulene. Earthy, woody note. Found in hops and sage.

Terpinolene. Slightly woody and floral note.

Terpenes and the "entourage effect": what we know, what we do not

The entourage effect hypothesis was formalised by the researcher Ethan Russo in a review article published in 2011 in the *British Journal of Pharmacology*. According to this hypothesis, the action of cannabinoids would be modulated or amplified by the terpenes co-extracted in a full-spectrum hemp extract.

This hypothesis remains under investigation:

  • controlled clinical trials comparing a CBD isolate with a full spectrum at the same doses are rare and underpowered;
  • the proposed biochemical mechanisms (modulation of blood-brain barrier permeability, interaction with the CB1/CB2 receptors) are essentially documented in vitro or in animals;
  • the EFSA has not recognised any health claim linked to the entourage effect, and the MILDECA regularly restates the strict framework governing claims in communication aimed at the general public.

For this reason, no French CBD brand may legally state that terpenes "reinforce the effectiveness" of CBD or "amplify its benefits".

Terpenes and the sensory profile of CBD products

While the therapeutic interest of terpenes remains hypothetical, their sensory role is demonstrated and explained. In a full-spectrum oil, terpenes define the taste, the smell and the vegetal note of the product. A CBD isolate, by definition free of terpenes, is neutral on the nose and on the palate.

This is also why CBD flowers are sometimes named after their terpene profile rather than their CBD content: a "Lemon Haze" flower is dominated by limonene, a "Critical Mass" by myrcene, an "OG Kush" by beta-caryophyllene.

Safety and regulatory constraints

Terpenes are generally recognised as safe (GRAS status in the United States) at common food concentrations. At high concentrations, certain pure terpenes show toxicity (respiratory irritation, skin sensitisation for linalool and limonene) documented in the INRS toxicological data sheets.

In a properly formulated full-spectrum CBD product, terpene concentrations remain well below risk thresholds. The main precaution concerns people sensitive to essential oils (respiratory allergies, eczema), who should test a small quantity or turn to a terpene-free isolate. On the product legislation side, the French framework arising from the Conseil d'État ruling of 29 December 2022 authorises the sale of full-spectrum extracts containing natural terpenes and cannabinoids — provided the finished THC content stays ≤ 0.30 % and the product contains no cannabinoid classified as a narcotic by the ANSM in June 2024 (HHC, H4CBD, THCP and derivatives).

The available studies are essentially preclinical. No French or European authority has validated a health claim linked to terpenes for sleep, relaxation, anxiety or pain. Brands that claim otherwise are stepping outside the legal framework.

Does a CBD isolate contain terpenes?

No. By definition, an isolate is pure CBD at 99 %+, with no terpene and no other cannabinoid. The sensory profile is neutral. To enjoy hemp terpenes, choose a full-spectrum or broad-spectrum extract.

Do hemp terpenes make a saliva test positive?

No. Only delta-9-THC triggers a positive screening result. Terpenes are not looked for by approved drug tests.

Why do CBD flowers smell so strong?

Flowers concentrate the trichomes and therefore the terpenes. Careful drying and curing preserve this aromatic profile. Grinding releases the volatile compounds and heightens the smell.

Are terpenes banned in cosmetics in France?

No, but those classified as allergens (limonene, linalool, geraniol and 24 others) must appear on the label above certain concentrations under the European cosmetics regulation 1223/2009. Check the INCI list if you are sensitive.
