CBDA: what is cannabidiolic acid?

CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is the acidic, natural form of CBD, present in the fresh hemp plant before any decarboxylation. It turns into CBD under the effect of heat - drying, cooking, vaporising. Like CBD, CBDA falls under the European Novel Food regulation as soon as it is intended to be ingested, for want of any significant history of human consumption before 1997.

What exactly is CBDA?

CBDA is produced by the hemp plant from CBGA (cannabigerolic acid), through the action of the enzyme CBDA synthase. It is the molecule found in a fresh, unheated flower, in raw hemp juice, or in so-called "raw" extracts. It accounts for virtually all the acidic cannabinoid content of a standing plant: CBD proper appears only after decarboxylation. For the general definition of CBD, see our article What is CBD?.

From acid to active molecule: decarboxylation

Decarboxylation is the chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group (-COOH) from the CBDA molecule under the effect of heat, releasing CO2 and giving rise to CBD. It happens gradually during drying at room temperature, and faster during deliberate heating, at around 100 to 150 °C for 30 to 45 minutes for a near-complete conversion. That is why commercial oils and flowers contain mostly CBD, and only residual traces of CBDA.

Does CBDA have any value of its own?

A few preclinical studies - cell cultures, animal models - explore avenues specific to CBDA, notably its interaction with 5-HT1A serotonin receptors, a mechanism distinct from that of CBD. These data remain preliminary and have given rise to no health claim validated by the EFSA. Products marketed as "rich in CBDA" (raw hemp juice, unheated tinctures) belong to a niche market, with no established clinical evidence in humans to date.

The stability of CBDA over time

Unlike CBD, CBDA is unstable over time: exposed to air, light and heat, it gradually decarboxylates, even at room temperature. A "raw" extract therefore loses part of its CBDA over the months, through spontaneous conversion into CBD. This is one of the reasons raw products must be kept refrigerated, away from light, and used up quickly after opening.

The regulatory status of CBDA in France and Europe

The European Novel Food catalogue includes CBDA alongside CBD among the ingredients considered novel, for want of any significant history of human consumption before 15 May 1997. In concrete terms, an ingested product containing CBDA follows the same regime as CBD: withdrawn from the French market since 15 May 2026 in the absence of Novel Food authorisation, a point detailed in our article on the withdrawal of CBD gummies. CBDA and CBD: how to tell them apart on a label

A certificate of analysis (CoA) generally shows two separate lines: the CBDA content and the CBD content, sometimes grouped under "total CBD" via a conversion formula. A "raw" product will show a CBDA level close to the whole of the acidic cannabinoids; a decarboxylated product (a standard oil, a dried and heated flower) will show the opposite. Always check the certificate before buying, whatever the format.

Frequently asked questions

Is CBDA legal in France?

CBDA naturally present in hemp follows the same framework as CBD: authorised provided the finished product complies with the 0.30% THC threshold. In ingested form, however, it falls under the Novel Food regulation, as CBD has since May 2026.

Is CBDA more effective than CBD?

No robust clinical study allows that to be asserted. The available data remain preclinical, and no health claim is validated in Europe for CBDA.

Why are some products sold "unheated"?

Some manufacturers offer raw extracts in order to preserve CBDA rather than CBD, on the idea that the two molecules might have different action profiles. That hypothesis has yet to be confirmed scientifically.

How do I know whether my oil contains CBDA?

The independent certificate of analysis sets out the exact split between acidic cannabinoids (CBDA) and decarboxylated ones (CBD). Always ask for it before buying a product.
