Microdosing CBD: a progressive method and practical benchmarks
Par The Phytogrammes team ·
Microdosing means taking very small quantities of CBD, often 1 to 3 mg, spread across several intakes during the day rather than in a single larger dose. The aim is to observe a gradual effect without drowsiness or a felt build-up of tolerance. In France, only CBD complying with the legal threshold of 0.30% THC in the finished product may be sold: microdosing recreational THC, by contrast, has no legal framework.

What is microdosing as applied to CBD?
Microdosing refers to a fractioned, minimal intake, generally below 5 mg per dose, repeated two to four times a day. The EFSA published in February 2026 a provisionally safe daily dose of 0.0275 mg per kilogram of body weight, or roughly 2 mg a day for a 70 kg adult, applicable to CBD food supplements.
This approach differs from the usual "one dose, one visible effect" logic. It aims instead to weave CBD into the background of a routine, without seeking an immediate sensation. User feedback on this kind of practice remains subjective and non-standardised.
Why some users choose this method
Some users report preferring small, repeated quantities to a single larger dose, in order to avoid the drowsiness sometimes associated with high concentrations. Others simply want to test their sensitivity threshold before increasing gradually.
No French clinical study has formally compared microdosing with conventional intake. The practice rests on individual experience and empirical adjustment, not on a validated posology.
The progressive method, step by step
Three principles structure a coherent microdosing approach.
- Start low: one drop of a low-concentration oil, for example 5%, or roughly 1 to 2 mg of CBD.
- Keep a logbook: time of intake, context and how you felt, noted over two to four weeks.
- Increase in steps: add one further drop only after several days of stable observation.
Sublingual oil with a dropper remains the format best suited to this logic, since the dose can be adjusted one unit at a time. Gummies or capsules, with a fixed dose per piece, lend themselves less well to strict microdosing.
What the French legal framework says about THC
The title "microdosing THC and CBD" invites confusion. In France, a finished product may not legally contain more than 0.30% THC, in accordance with the Conseil d'État decision of 29 December 2022. THC for recreational purposes remains a narcotic, whatever dose is contemplated.
The trial of cannabis for medical use run by the ANSM, which included patients on THC-based treatment, ended in 2024. It does not constitute a framework transposable to personal use. No microdosing of THC is therefore legally conceivable outside that closed scheme, which was reserved for patients monitored in hospital.
Precautions and limits of CBD microdosing
Microdosing does not remove the usual precautions. CBD use remains inadvisable for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or of childbearing age, for minors and for people on medical treatment, because of possible interactions with certain medicines such as anticoagulants or antiepileptics. Medical advice is recommended if in doubt.
Even at a low repeated dose, full-spectrum oil contains traces of THC that may be detected during a saliva test, as the Cour de cassation confirmed on 21 June 2023. Drivers and athletes subject to testing must bear this in mind, even when microdosing.
To go further into the choice of quantities and formats, our page on how much CBD to favour according to your use sets out complementary practical benchmarks.
Frequently asked questions
How long before an effect is felt when microdosing?
With a sublingual oil, an effect may be perceived between 15 and 45 minutes after intake, but the sensations reported remain subjective and vary from one person to another. Microdosing mainly aims at a cumulative effect over several weeks, not a marked immediate sensation.
Is microdosing THC legal in France?
No, outside the former ANSM medical trial, which is now closed. A product containing more than 0.30% THC remains a narcotic, whatever the quantity consumed at each intake.
Can you microdose with CBD gummies?
It is possible but less precise, since each gummy has a fixed dose, often 10 mg. For strict microdosing, sublingual oil with a dropper offers finer adjustment, drop by drop.
Do you need medical advice before starting?
It is not compulsory for wellbeing use, but it is recommended if you are on medical treatment, pregnant or breastfeeding, or unsure about a possible interaction. CBD is not a medicine and does not replace medical advice.
