How much CBD should you take? Usage benchmarks

Par ·

The useful amount of CBD depends on the person, the product and the wellness goal being pursued, with no therapeutic dosage validated by the French authorities. Users generally start at 5-15 mg once or twice a day, then adjust over two to four weeks. Since 9 February 2026, EFSA has recommended a far lower provisionally safe daily dose (≈ 2 mg/day for 70 kg) for food supplements.

Why we do not talk about "dosage"

In French law, the word "dosage" (posologie) is reserved for medicines. Wellness CBD is not one: it holds no marketing authorisation in France, apart from Epidyolex®, a hospital medicine reserved for certain rare forms of epilepsy. A brand that links an amount to a precise effect ("25 mg for anxiety") tips over into being a medicine by presentation within the meaning of article L.5111-1 of the Public Health Code, with heavy penalties attached. We therefore speak of a usage amount, in a wellness context only.

The factors that influence what is felt

Several parameters explain why the same amount does not produce the same effect from one person to another: body weight, liver metabolism (cytochrome P450), the route of administration (sublingual, oral, topical, vaporisation), the concentration of the product and its cannabinoid profile (isolate, broad spectrum, full spectrum), and the context of use (on an empty stomach or with a fatty meal). This variability justifies a gradual approach and personal observation.

The "low and slow" approach

The most widespread practice is to begin with a small amount and increase gradually over two to four weeks: 5 to 10 mg once a day in the starting phase, adjustment to 10-15 mg or the addition of a second dose if nothing is felt, then settling on the amount that matches the experience being sought. Keeping a log (time, amount, sensations observed) helps to give substance to an experience that remains subjective.

The EFSA daily dose, a recent benchmark

On 9 February 2026, EFSA published a provisionally safe daily dose of 0.0275 mg of CBD per kilogram of body weight per day, or around 2 mg/day for a 70 kg adult, with an uncertainty factor of 400. This value applies to food supplements and remains well below the usage amounts commonly observed (10-30 mg/day): it makes almost all of the oils sold as supplements non-compliant with the EFSA threshold. Since 15 May 2026, the DGAL has strictly applied the Novel Food regulation: withdrawal of CBD oils, gummies, capsules and drinks without validated European authorisation. Our article on CBD gummies sets out the concrete consequences of this withdrawal.

Reading the label and staying cautious

Before any purchase, check the total amount of CBD, the amount per dose, the number of doses per container, the hemp variety, the batch number with certificate of analysis, and the THC level (≤ 0.30 %). An example calculation: a 10 mL bottle at 10 % contains 1,000 mg of CBD, or about 4 mg per drop across 250 drops; an initial dose of 5 mg therefore corresponds to 1-2 drops. ANSES also submitted to ECHA in 2025 a proposal to classify CBD as "presumed toxic for reproduction", hence particular caution for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or of childbearing age, for minors and for people on medical treatment.

CBD is not a medicine. If medical symptoms persist, consult a healthcare professional.

Frequently asked questions

How many drops for 10 mg of CBD?

That depends on the concentration: around 2-3 drops for a 10 % oil (≈ 4 mg/drop), 5 drops for a 5 % oil (≈ 2 mg/drop). Check the manufacturer's stated figure.

What should I do if I feel nothing?

Check the quality (CoA), the regularity of use and the route of administration. If nothing changes after 4 to 6 weeks of regular use, the format may not suit your profile.

Is CBD dangerous at high doses?

The EFSA threshold of 2 mg/day remains a cautious safety threshold based on animal data. The known adverse effects remain mild: drowsiness, diarrhoea, fatigue.

Should CBD be taken at a particular time?

There is no absolute rule. Settling on a fixed moment (morning, evening) makes it easier to observe what you feel; regularity matters more than the exact hour.
