CBD liqueur and cocktails: what you need to know
Par The Phytogrammes team ·
A CBD liqueur or syrup for cocktails is made by infusing a CBD oil or tincture into a warm simple syrup, cold, never boiled with the alcohol. In France this practice remains reserved for personal use, and combining CBD with alcohol calls for particular caution, given the lack of sufficient data on their interaction.

The framework to know before you start
A CBD cocktail or liqueur, as a food preparation, falls within the scope of EU Regulation 2015/2283 on novel foods. Since 15 May 2026, the Direction générale de l'alimentation has been withdrawing from the French market any CBD drink lacking European authorisation. This recipe assumes you already have a legal CBD oil or tincture, for your personal consumption only.
The CBD-alcohol interaction, a necessary caution
CBD is metabolised by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 and CYP2C19, the same pathways involved in breaking down certain substances. The available data remain limited, but several health-monitoring sources recommend caution where it is consumed together with alcohol, in particular because of a potentially heightened drowsiness. Avoid combining the two if you are on any medical treatment, if you are going to drive afterwards, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Why make a syrup cold rather than a boiled infusion
Prolonged heat degrades part of the CBD above 160-180 °C. To preserve the molecule in a cocktail syrup, first make a classic simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar, brought to the boil then cooled), and only stir in the CBD oil or tincture once the syrup has come back down below 40 °C, whisking to homogenise it.
The recipe for a CBD cocktail syrup
Ingredients: 100 g sugar, 100 ml water, your CBD oil or tincture dosed according to your personal use. Method: bring the water and sugar to the boil, stir until completely dissolved, take off the heat, leave to cool below 40 °C, then whisk in the CBD oil. Keep this syrup in the fridge in an airtight bottle for up to a week.
Use this syrup at a rate of a few millilitres per cocktail, in place of a classic syrup, in a lemonade, a mocktail or, for adults, a cocktail based on a light alcohol.
Dosage: staying below the provisional daily dose
If you stir 5 ml of a 5 % oil (50 mg/ml) into 100 ml of syrup, you get roughly 250 mg of CBD in total, i.e. 25 mg per 10 ml of syrup used in a cocktail. That is far above the provisionally safe daily dose published by EFSA on 9 February 2026, set at about 2 mg for a 70 kg adult. Use this syrup in very small amounts, a few millilitres, and never more than one cocktail a day.
CBD is not a medicine. If you are on any current treatment, ask your pharmacist's advice before combining it with alcohol.
Frequently asked questions
Can CBD and alcohol be mixed safely?
Caution remains the rule: both substances are metabolised by shared liver pathways, and the combination could heighten drowsiness. Avoid combining them before driving.
Can a homemade CBD liqueur be sold?
No. Since 15 May 2026, CBD drinks without Novel Food authorisation have been withdrawn from the French commercial market; this preparation remains reserved for personal use.
Why not boil the CBD oil with the syrup?
Prolonged heat above 160-180 °C degrades part of the CBD. Always stir it in once the syrup has cooled below 40 °C.
How long does a homemade CBD syrup keep?
About a week in the fridge, in an airtight bottle. Check that no fermentation has begun before each use.
