The EFSA daily reference
What each 25 to 220 µm sieve keeps from a trichome harvest, depending on the size of the heads and how fresh the material is.
The sieves
Left to right: 220, 190, 160, 120, 90, 73, 45 and 25 µm. On the rule, one mark is 10 µm.
The 120u bag keeps 50 % of this harvest's heads.

Head size
Measured mean diameter of fresh heads: 80 µm on industrial hemp, 129 µm on strains bred for resin (Small and Naraine, 2016).
State of the material
Dried, a head loses 15 % of its diameter in the first month and 24 % in the first year: it drops one bag.
The 120u keeps the largest heads, often still carried by a piece of stalk. On a strain with large glands, it collects the most.
A sieve stops whatever is wider than its mesh. In the standard stack of eight bags, each bag therefore keeps what went through the bag above without going through its own: the 90u, the heads from 90 to 120 µm. Those windows are geometry; the share of the harvest that falls into each depends on the size of the heads.
The reference diameters come from Small and Naraine (Genetic Resources and Crop Evolution, 2016): 80 µm on average on industrial hemp, 129 µm on strains bred for resin, and a shrinkage of 15 % in the first month after harvest, 24 % in the first year. The spread around the mean is not published, so the model assumes it log-normal, about ± 20 %. A hash sold as “120u” may also combine two neighbouring meshes: no standard governs the notation.
“3x filtered” hash is dry-sifted in three passes; frozen starts from plants frozen fresh, whose heads kept their size; static sorts the powder with static electricity.
