Hand and wrist pain — CBD wellness rituals
Par The Phytogrammes team ·
Hands and wrists are working all the time: keyboard, driving, carrying loads, phone. That continuous demand explains how common joint pain is in these areas, between osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinopathies. A CBD cosmetic can accompany a massage and self-care routine, without replacing medical advice or an ergonomic adjustment.

Why do my hands and wrists hurt?
Several causes often coexist. Osteoarthritis of the fingers affects the cartilage of the interphalangeal joints or the base of the thumb (rhizarthrosis); according to Inserm, osteoarthritis affects the majority of people over 65 to varying degrees. Carpal tunnel syndrome, a compression of the median nerve at the wrist, is common among screen workers and is confirmed by clinical examination and electromyography. Tendinopathies such as De Quervain's tenosynovitis or epicondylitis result from repetitive movements. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease affecting the small joints, requires rheumatological follow-up in line with HAS recommendations. The INRS links all of these musculoskeletal disorders to the leading cause of recognised occupational illness in France.
The French framework for CBD cosmetics
Since February 2021, cannabidiol has been listed in the European Commission's CosIng database, and creams fall under European cosmetics regulation 1223/2009. The ruling of the Conseil d'État of 29 December 2022 stabilised the market around a finished-product THC threshold below 0.30%. A cosmetic cannot legally claim any analgesic or anti-inflammatory action; the authorised vocabulary remains that of "joint comfort" and the "massage ritual".
A self-care ritual for hands and wrists
Morning and evening, five minutes of gentle mobilisation helps maintain suppleness: slowly opening and closing the fist, wrist circles in each direction, stretching the fingers with the wrist in extension for 15 seconds, then stretching the forearm in flexion.
For the massage, take a small amount of balm, warm it between your hands, then massage each finger joint and the wrist in slow circles, spending 30 to 60 seconds on the painful area. On the ergonomics side, adjust the keyboard height to keep your forearms parallel to the floor, choose a mouse suited to your hand, and take a 30-second break every 30 minutes. Good-quality sleep and regular physical activity remain cross-cutting levers on the perception of pain, as our article on exercise and inflammation shows.
How to choose a CBD hand cream
A typical formulation combines hemp-derived cannabidiol, nourishing plant butters (shea, cocoa), plant oils (jojoba, sweet almond), and sometimes menthol at a moderate concentration, the skin of the hands being close to mucous membranes. Before buying, check the CBD content in milligrams, the certificate of analysis published by the brand, the full INCI list with no prohibited cannabinoids, and compliance with the 0.30% THC threshold.
When should you see a professional?
Several signs should send you for advice without delay: numbness or night-time tingling in the fingers, symmetrical pain in the small joints with prolonged morning stiffness, persistent swelling, loss of strength, intense pain of sudden onset, or pain lasting beyond two to three weeks despite relative rest. A GP, rheumatologist, occupational physician or specialist physiotherapist are the reference contacts.
CBD is not a medicine. In the event of persistent, intense or worsening pain, consult a healthcare professional. Use is not advised for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for minors.
Frequently asked questions
Can a CBD cream replace treatment for rheumatoid arthritis?
No. Rheumatoid arthritis requires specific medical treatment prescribed by a rheumatologist. A cosmetic is never a substitute for that treatment.
Can carpal tunnel syndrome be improved by a CBD balm?
Carpal tunnel syndrome requires medical assessment and, depending on severity, conservative measures or surgery. A balm does not treat the compression but can form part of a comfort ritual.
Should you take breaks at work?
Yes. The INRS recommends regular micro-breaks. Thirty seconds every 30 minutes, with a few mobilisation movements, is enough to interrupt the load on the tendons.
Can rhizarthrosis be treated with a CBD cream?
No therapeutic action on osteoarthritis is validated for CBD cosmetics. Treatment combines painkillers, physiotherapy, orthoses and, in some cases, surgery.
