CBD gnocchi with tomato and basil sauce: a recipe for personal use
Par The Phytogrammes team ·
CBD gnocchi are made by stirring a CBD oil into a warm tomato-and-basil sauce, off the heat and below 70 °C, to preserve the molecule. In France, this recipe remains reserved for strictly personal use: since 15 May 2026, the DGAL has been withdrawing from the market every CBD food preparation sold in shops, in application of EU regulation 2015/2283 on novel foods.

The framework to know before cooking
The DGAL's operational summary, documented by Newsweed, confirms that prepared dishes containing CBD have been off the French commercial market since 15 May 2026. This recipe starts from a CBD oil you already hold, for your own consumption, never for resale nor for serving to guests without explicit information.
Keep the prepared gnocchi and sauce out of reach of children and animals.
A simple tomato sauce, no industrial jar
A successful tomato-and-basil sauce comes down to three things: ripe tomatoes or a good-quality tin (whole peeled rather than industrial passata), a slow reduction to concentrate the flavours, and fresh basil added right at the end of cooking to preserve its fragrance.
Allow 20 to 25 minutes of gentle simmering for a sauce that has lost its raw acidity and gained in smoothness, with no need for added sugar.
The recipe for 4 portions
Ingredients for the gnocchi: 1 kg floury potatoes, 250 g flour, 1 egg yolk, salt. For the sauce: 800 g peeled tomatoes, 2 garlic cloves, a drizzle of olive oil, about ten fresh basil leaves, grated Parmesan, and a CBD oil dosed according to your personal use.
Method: cook the potatoes whole in their skins, peel them hot, mash them, then work in the flour, the egg yolk and the salt. Shape 2 cm ropes, cut them into pieces, and roll them over a fork. Cook them in gently simmering salted water: they rise to the surface in 2 to 3 minutes.
For the sauce, soften the garlic in the olive oil over a low heat, add the crushed tomatoes, season with salt, and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes. Take off the heat, let it cool for 2 to 3 minutes, then add the shredded basil and the CBD oil: above 70 °C, the molecule degrades. Spoon over the drained gnocchi and scatter with Parmesan.
Dosing: staying below the provisional daily dose
If you add 4 ml of a 5% oil (50 mg/ml) to the sauce for 4 portions, you are incorporating around 200 mg of CBD, meaning 50 mg per portion. That is far above the provisionally safe daily dose published by the EFSA on 9 February 2026, set at 0.0275 mg/kg/day, roughly 2 mg/day for an adult of 70 kg, calculated with an uncertainty factor of 400 from hepatotoxic effects observed in animals.
For more cautious personal use, limit yourself to 1 ml of a low-strength oil across the whole recipe, and to one portion a day at most.
Variations and storage
Add a dash of cream for a rosé sauce, or black olives and capers for a saltier version. Tomato sauce freezes very well for up to 3 months, but prepare it without CBD oil before freezing and stir the oil in only at the moment of serving, into the portion once reheated and then cooled a little.
Always check the certificate of analysis of your oil before use. Our CBD buying guide sets out the criteria to demand of a serious supplier. CBD is not a medicine: if in doubt, consult a healthcare professional.
Frequently asked questions
Can a shop-bought tomato sauce be used?
Yes, provided it is low in sugar and not too acidic. Reheat it gently, let it cool below 70 °C before adding the CBD oil and the fresh basil.
Why add the basil only at the end of cooking?
Basil quickly loses its fragrance and blackens under prolonged heat. Adding it off the heat, at the same time as the CBD oil, preserves both the aroma and the molecule.
Can home-made gnocchi be replaced with shop-bought ones?
Yes, it works for the sauce and the CBD dosing. The texture will, however, be denser than a fresh home-made gnocchi, because industrial versions often contain more flour.
Can this dish be served to guests?
No, unless each person has been explicitly informed and has consented beforehand. Since 15 May 2026, prepared dishes containing CBD can no longer be marketed in France: this recipe remains reserved for strictly personal use.
