Drying hashish and hemp extracts: the method

Hashish and hemp extracts (kief, rosin, ice-o-lator) are ideally dried at between 15 and 18 °C, at a humidity of 55 to 60%, away from direct light, over several days to several weeks depending on the thickness of the product. Drying that is too fast or too warm degrades the terpenes; drying that is too slow in a damp environment encourages mould.

Why drying changes everything in an extract

A freshly pressed or sifted extract still holds a share of residual moisture from the raw material. That moisture must evaporate slowly for the texture to stabilise, whether the product is a crumbly hash to be sifted or a rosin meant to harden into a slab. Drying that is too brutal, in the heat of a radiator for instance, also drives off the most volatile terpenes, the ones that carry much of the aroma.

The parameters to control

The ideal temperature lies between 15 and 18 °C: above 21 °C, the light terpenes begin to evaporate faster than is desirable. Ambient humidity should stay between 55 and 60% to allow gradual evaporation without excessive drying of the surface, which would trap the moisture inside. A hygrometer placed near the product lets you verify these conditions rather than relying on an estimate.

Darkness protects the cannabinoids and terpenes from UV light, which accelerates their photochemical degradation. Finally, gentle air circulation, with no direct flow onto the product, evens out the drying without creating a dry crust on the surface.

The step-by-step method

Spread the extract in a thin layer on a non-porous support, greaseproof paper or glass, without piling it up. Place it in a cool, dark, moderately ventilated container or room. Turn it over gently once or twice a day during the first week so that both faces dry evenly. For a sifted hash, allow generally 5 to 10 days before reaching a stable texture; for a rosin or a denser extract, 2 to 3 weeks may be needed depending on the thickness.

How to tell when drying is finished

A properly dried extract no longer sticks excessively to the finger and keeps a slight malleability without being soft. If it crumbles too easily, it has gone too far into dryness, which impoverishes the aroma and makes storage more fragile. Conversely, a texture still sticky and soft after several weeks signals residual moisture that is too high, with a risk of mould in storage.

Storage after drying

Once dry, keep the extract in an airtight glass container, away from light and heat, ideally between 15 and 20 °C. A maturing cycle of several weeks to a few months in these conditions often improves the texture and the aromatic harmony, a principle close to the curing practised on dried flowers. Frequently asked questions

Can drying be sped up with a dehumidifier?

Yes, provided you stay within the 55 to 60% humidity range. A dehumidifier that is too aggressive dries the surface too quickly and traps moisture inside the product.

Are the oven or the microwave suitable for drying an extract?

No. Direct heat rapidly degrades the terpenes and can alter the structure of the product. Slow drying at a cool room temperature remains the most reliable method.

How can I tell whether an extract has gone mouldy?

A musty smell, powdery white patches or an abnormally spongy texture are signs of mould. If in doubt, do not consume the product.

How long can a well-dried extract be kept?

Properly dried and stored somewhere cool and away from light, a hemp extract keeps most of its qualities for several months. Aromatic intensity does, however, decline gradually over time.
