THC withdrawal: the place of CBD in quitting
Par The Phytogrammes team ·
Stopping THC is frequently accompanied by transient symptoms: irritability, sleep disturbance and reduced appetite, over one to two weeks according to the available clinical data. CBD, a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, is sometimes built into a transition approach, but no French authority has validated any therapeutic claim on the subject.

What is known about cannabis withdrawal
Cannabis withdrawal syndrome is recognised in the addiction literature, with an intensity that varies according to how often and for how long the person has been consuming. The best-documented symptoms include irritability, anxiety, sleep disturbance, reduced appetite and, more rarely, sweating or mild tremors. They generally appear within 24 to 72 hours of stopping and most often ease within one to two weeks.
Why some people turn to CBD
CBD is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, without the psychoactive effect of THC. Its similar molecular structure has led a number of consumers to use it as part of a transition, for example by gradually replacing a THC-based product with a CBD oil or flower that complies with the legal threshold. This practice remains empirical: the scientific data available on using CBD specifically to accompany withdrawal remains limited and supports no validated therapeutic conclusion.
What the French legal framework says
THC remains a narcotic in France outside the framework of lawful CBD, whose finished product must show a delta-9-THC content of 0.30 % or less, in accordance with the Conseil d'État decision of 29 December 2022. Synthetic cannabinoids (HHC, H4CBD, THCP) have been classified as narcotics by the ANSM since June 2024 and have no place in an approach aimed at reducing consumption.
Where to turn for support
Drogues Info Service (0 800 23 13 13, free and anonymous) is the national reference service for any question relating to cannabis use. The Consultations Jeunes Consommateurs (CJC), present in most départements, offer free and confidential support, including for adults. Your GP remains the first point of contact for assessing the intensity of the dependence and referring you to an addiction specialist if needed.
Precautions if you use CBD during a transition
Favour an isolate or a broad spectrum certified free of detectable THC, with a certificate of analysis (CoA) from an independent laboratory, to avoid any residual trace of THC. The EFSA recommends not exceeding around 2 mg of CBD per day for a 70 kg adult. CBD is not a medicine and neither treats nor cures a dependence: if you find it hard to stop on your own, support from an addiction service remains the recommended route.
Frequently asked questions
How long does THC withdrawal last?
The most intense symptoms generally occur within the first 72 hours and ease within one to two weeks. The duration varies according to how long and how often the person has been consuming.
Does CBD remove withdrawal symptoms?
No French health authority has validated this claim. The available data are insufficient to conclude that CBD has any specific effect on cannabis withdrawal.
Where can I call for free, anonymous support?
Drogues Info Service (0 800 23 13 13) is the national reference number, free and confidential, available for any question relating to cannabis.
Is a full-spectrum CBD product suitable during withdrawal?
No, because it contains traces of THC that could restart a dependence or distort a medical assessment. An isolate certified free of detectable THC is preferable in this context.
