Clearing THC from the body: myths and reality

THC is not eliminated any faster thanks to a detox product: its elimination depends on liver metabolism and on the gradual release from fatty tissue, where this fat-soluble molecule is stored. No drink and no kit sold online has been shown to speed up that process. Only time spent abstinent genuinely brings measurable concentrations down.

How the body handles THC

After inhalation or ingestion, THC passes into the blood and then migrates to fat-rich tissue, where it is taken up and slowly released again. The liver metabolises it mainly through cytochrome P450 enzymes, into several metabolites including THC-COOH, the molecule looked for in toxicological analyses. Elimination then takes place through urine and faeces, over a period that depends on the dose, the frequency of consumption and individual metabolism.

The factors that make the detection window vary

Several elements influence the speed of elimination observed from one person to another: frequency of consumption, occasional or daily; body fat mass, THC being a lipophilic molecule; individual metabolism and liver function; and the mode of consumption, smoked or vaporised, ingestion prolonging the presence of metabolites in the body.

Occasional use generally translates into a shorter detection window than chronic use, where the THC stored in fat carries on being released for several weeks after stopping.

"Detox" methods: what the science says

Drinking a lot of water, drinking cranberry juice, or exercising intensely just before a test: none of these practices has been scientifically shown to speed up THC elimination. Over-hydration temporarily dilutes the urine, something a laboratory can spot through dilution markers, but it has no effect on the THC stored in fatty tissue. Intense exercise can even transiently release THC stored in fat into the blood. Detox kits sold online are not validated by any French health authority.

Roadside testing: no legal shortcut

On the road, article L.235-1 of the Highway Code penalises driving after using narcotics with no tolerance threshold: the mere detection of THC in saliva constitutes the offence, whatever the quantity taken. The Cour de cassation, in its ruling of 21 June 2023, confirmed that no circumstance, including the legality of a CBD product, exonerates the driver. The only reliable measure remains not getting behind the wheel after consuming.

What to do in practice

If a test is coming up, the only variable that genuinely counts is the time elapsed since the last consumption. For occasional use, THC remains detectable in saliva for around 6 to 8 hours, and for up to 24 hours in regular users, according to the data relayed by Drogues Info Service. How long does THC stay detectable?

It varies a great deal depending on the test used: a few hours to a day in saliva for occasional use, several days to a few weeks in urine for regular use, and up to 90 days in hair.

Does drinking a lot of water before a test help?

No, not reliably. It may temporarily dilute the urine, a phenomenon laboratories know how to detect, but it does not speed up the actual elimination of the THC stored in the body.

Can legal CBD cause a THC test to fail?

Yes, potentially. A full-spectrum CBD product contains legal traces of THC, up to 0.30% of the finished product, which can be enough for a positive result, even with no intention of consuming cannabis.

Is there any product that really eliminates THC faster?

No product sold in France has scientifically demonstrated a reliable acceleration of THC elimination. Time spent abstinent remains, to date, the only validated factor.
