CBD brownies: the home recipe and the dosing benchmarks
Par The Phytogrammes team ·
There is currently no compliant commercial CBD brownie on sale in France: ingested CBD food products have been withdrawn from the market since 15 May 2026 for want of Novel Food authorisation. Making your own at home, from a CBD oil you legally hold and for strictly personal use, remains the only option consistent with the current framework.

Regulatory note to read first
Since 15 May 2026, CBD products intended for ingestion have been withdrawn from the French market by the DGAL as long as they lack European authorisation under EU regulation 2015/2283 on novel foods. The recipe that follows describes strictly personal use, from a CBD oil you already hold. It is not intended for any form of sale or commercial sharing.
Why make your own brownies rather than buy them
Even before the Novel Food turning point, pre-dosed CBD edibles had the same limitations as ready-made CBD coffee: a fixed dose that cannot be adjusted, a high price per milligram and hemp traceability that is rarely documented. Making your brownie at home lets you control precisely how much CBD is added, using an oil whose certificate of analysis you know.
The basic recipe for around 12 portions
Ingredients: 200 g dark chocolate, 150 g butter, 3 eggs, 150 g sugar, 80 g flour, a pinch of salt, and the CBD oil added at the end of preparation according to the dose you choose.
Method: melt the chocolate and butter in a bain-marie, over a low heat, without exceeding 70 °C. Take off the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Fold in the eggs beaten with the sugar, then the flour and salt. Add the CBD oil to the warm mixture, once the preparation has dropped below 70 °C, and mix well for an even distribution. Pour into a buttered tin and bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 160 °C. Let it cool before cutting into equal portions, for a predictable dose portion by portion.
The chocolate and butter play a useful role beyond taste: CBD is lipophilic, and it disperses better in a fatty matrix than when added to a watery liquid.
Dosing the CBD without getting it wrong
The EFSA published on 9 February 2026 a provisionally safe daily dose of 0.0275 mg per kg of body weight, roughly 2 mg for an adult of 70 kg, calculated with a substantial uncertainty factor on the basis of hepatotoxic effects observed in animals. Most commercial CBD oils go well beyond that threshold in a single suggested dose. Spread the total quantity of oil added to the mixture across all the portions you cut, write the quantity per portion on a piece of paper stuck to the container, and always start with the smallest possible portion before adjusting, as with any CBD dose.
Heat, storage and safety
CBD degrades progressively above 70 °C: adding the oil to a preparation that is still hot, or at the end of direct cooking, reduces its actual effectiveness. Store the brownies in an airtight box, away from anyone unaware of what they contain, in particular children and guests. Always label the container: the visual resemblance to an ordinary brownie is the main risk of confusion, especially at a shared meal.
Precautions before you start
Do not consume before driving: the Cour de cassation has confirmed that the legality of a CBD product provides no exoneration in the event of a saliva test positive for THC. Check that your oil contains no prohibited cannabinoid such as HHC or THCP. This kind of preparation remains inadvisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, for minors and for people on medication, because of possible interactions with liver enzymes.
Frequently asked questions
Can ready-made CBD brownies be bought in France?
No, with very rare exceptions: ingested food products containing CBD have been withdrawn from the market since 15 May 2026 for want of Novel Food authorisation. Those still on sale are non-compliant.
How long can a brownie be baked without degrading the CBD?
CBD starts to degrade significantly above a sustained 70 °C. Adding the oil at the end of preparation, to a mixture that has cooled rather than a hot one, limits that loss during baking.
How do I avoid over-dosing a CBD brownie?
Always work out the total quantity of oil added, divide it by the number of portions cut, and note the result per portion. Start with a minimal quantity and observe the effect before increasing it.
Can a CBD brownie cause a roadside test to fail?
If the oil used contains traces of THC, it is possible on a saliva test. For use followed by a car journey, a CBD isolate certified free of THC remains the only prudent option.
