Giving CBD at Christmas: what to check before you buy

Par ·

CBD has taken its place among end-of-year wellness gifts, alongside essential oils and massage sets. A good CBD gift is chosen first on objective criteria: a compliant THC level, a certificate of analysis, a format suited to the recipient. Here is how to find your way without going wrong.

Giving CBD at Christmas: what to check before you buy

Why CBD has joined the end-of-year gift list

The festive period concentrates tiredness, social demands and a busy schedule. Many people then look for products associated with a moment of pause: herbal tea, a candle, massage oil, and now CBD oil or balm. CBD nevertheless carries no validated health claim in France: it belongs to a wellness approach, not a promise of results.

The formats best suited to a gift

Several formats lend themselves well to a gift, depending on the person it is intended for.

  • Sublingual oil: the most common format, with the dose adjustable drop by drop, to be kept cool and away from light.
  • Cosmetic balm or massage oil: local application, with no ingestion, often seen as a more accessible gift for a newcomer.
  • Flower or resin: reserved for people already used to this way of consuming, to be vaporised rather than smoked.
  • Infusions and products to be ingested: their availability depends on the Novel Food framework in force at the time of purchase; check the product's status before giving it.

What to check before buying

Three simple checks avoid most disappointments:

  1. The certificate of analysis (CoA), issued by an independent laboratory, which confirms the actual CBD content and the absence of contaminants.
  2. The THC level, which must remain below 0.30% in the finished product, a threshold confirmed by the Conseil d'État on 29 December 2022.
  3. The absence of synthetic cannabinoids (HHC and derivatives), progressively classified as narcotics by the ANSM. Our article on synthetic cannabinoids explains why to avoid them, including as a gift.

For a first purchase, our guide to buying CBD in France sets out these criteria in more detail.

Who not to give CBD to

Certain groups should be excluded as a precaution, whatever the format chosen: minors, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people on long-term drug treatment, because of possible interactions via the hepatic cytochromes CYP3A4 and CYP2C19. If the recipient takes medication, it is better to opt for another wellness gift or to suggest they speak to their doctor before trying it.

Travelling with a CBD gift over the festive season

A family trip over the holidays sometimes means taking the gifted product on the road. A full-spectrum CBD, even one complying with the 0.30% THC threshold, can trigger a saliva test if you are driving. Our article on CBD and roadside testing explains why, and which formats reduce this risk for a driver.

Frequently asked questions

Is CBD legal to give as a gift in France?

Yes, provided the product complies with the 0.30% THC threshold and contains no banned cannabinoid. Check the certificate of analysis before buying, particularly for an online purchase from an unknown seller.

What budget for a quality CBD gift?

The price varies with concentration and format, but a properly laboratory-analysed product rarely costs less than a non-compliant one. An abnormally low price should raise doubts about the real CBD content stated on the label.

Can you give CBD to someone who takes medication?

It is not recommended without prior medical advice, because of possible interactions with many treatments. A topical cosmetic, with no notable systemic absorption, remains the most cautious option in that case.

How should a CBD product received at Christmas be stored?

Away from light and heat, in its original packaging. An opened oil generally keeps for several months; check the expiry date shown on the bottle.
