In plain terms
Cannabichromevarin is the "short" version of cannabichromene: its side chain has three carbons instead of five. Present in very small amounts in certain varieties, it is not psychoactive and remains little studied.

Pharmacology
Cannabichromevarin (CBCV) is the propyl-chain homologue of cannabichromene, isolated in 1975 by Shoyama and co-workers from the Thai "Meao variant" cannabis, at the same time as cannabigerovarin. It belongs to the varin series of hemp, derived from divarinolic acid rather than olivetolic acid. Its own pharmacology remains very poorly documented: no measured affinity for the CB1 or CB2 receptors has been published. The reference study on the CBC series showed that CBCV is well absorbed and penetrates the brain in mice, but that, unlike CBC, CBCA and CBCVA tested under the same conditions, it did not raise the seizure threshold in a mouse model of Dravet syndrome. This absence of effect, measured rather than assumed, sets CBCV apart from the rest of its family.

Biosynthetic pathway
Biosynthetic pathway: CBCV comes from the varin series, initiated by divarinolic acid instead of olivetolic acid. Condensation with geranyl pyrophosphate leads to cannabigerovarinic acid, which CBCA synthase cyclises into cannabichromevarinic acid (CBCVA). Decarboxylation of the latter, under the effect of heat or ageing, releases CBCV.
Legal framework
France
CBCV is not classified as a narcotic in France: it is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid whose chromene structure does not share the benzo[c]chromene nucleus of THC covered by the generic clause of the ANSM Decision of 22 May 2024. Like CBC, it is not listed by name; only THC remains regulated as a narcotic.
European Union
Not listed in the European Union narcotics schedules. Concentrated preparations intended for food use fall under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 on novel foods.

Structural classification

- Status
- Unscheduled
Toxicology and risks
Detection and analysis
