CBD and Black Friday: how to make the most of the deals without going wrong

Black Friday concentrates a significant share of many online shops' annual sales into a few days, CBD included. That concentration creates particular pressure: retailers multiply promo codes, flash sales and bundles, which makes calm comparison between two products harder. A slashed price draws attention before the composition does, whereas it is the opposite that protects the buyer.

Three practices come up regularly during heavy promotional periods. First, discounts advertised against an artificially inflated reference price, which makes the reduction less real than it appears. Second, the clearing of old stock or stock close to its best-before date, particularly on oils, which lose quality with time and exposure to light. Third, the occasional appearance of sellers with little regard for the compliance of their products, taking advantage of order volume to cut back on quality control.

The DGCCRF carries out regular checks on the labelling and claims of CBD products sold in France, including during periods of heavy commercial activity. A product on offer is neither more nor less subject to these rules than a product sold at full price.

Four points remain non-negotiable, whatever the advertised discount. The certificate of analysis (CoA) issued by an independent laboratory, dated to the specific batch being sold, not to a generic batch from the range. The THC level of the finished product, which must remain at or below 0.30%, in accordance with the Conseil d'État ruling of 29 December 2022. The absence of prohibited semi-synthetic cannabinoids (HHC, H4CBD, THCP), classified as narcotics by the ANSM since 2023-2024. And the manufacturing or expiry date, particularly for oils, which are sensitive to oxidation.

CBD oils and cosmetics remain the most stable formats in regulatory terms: their legal framework has not changed recently and they do not depend on a Novel Food authorisation. Flowers and resins, for their part, must carry a recent certificate of analysis and clear traceability of the variety grown. Conversely, ingested food products (gummies, bud infusions, drinks) have been withdrawn from the French market since 15 May 2026 for want of a European Novel Food authorisation: any promotion on this type of product signals non-compliance, regardless of the price displayed.

No discount makes the sale of a non-compliant product lawful. The following remain strictly prohibited in France: semi-synthetic cannabinoids (HHC and derivatives), CBD food products without a Novel Food authorisation, and any therapeutic claim of the "cures", "treats" or "heals" type, whether the product is on offer or not. A seller who multiplies this kind of wording during Black Friday to create a sense of urgency steps outside the framework authorised by the Public Health Code.

How can I tell whether a Black Friday reduction is real?

Compare the price displayed before the event, where possible via an independent price comparison tool or the site's history. A genuine reduction is applied to a stable reference price, not to a price inflated the day before the promotion.

Can a CBD oil on offer be close to its expiry date?

That is a real risk with large stocks cleared through promotions. Always check the manufacturing or expiry date before buying, particularly for liquid formats sensitive to oxidation.

Are CBD flowers on offer reliable?

Only if a recent certificate of analysis accompanies the batch being sold. The absence of a CoA, even on a heavily reduced product, should always deter the purchase.
