A resin does not load like a flower: it softens, runs and sticks. It needs something to hold it in the chamber, a device setting read with caution, and a screen cleaned after each pass. The temperatures that circulate in the charts often come from measurements under reduced pressure, not at atmospheric pressure.

This guide describes the equipment and its upkeep, without prescribing either a quantity or an effect. It sets what the volatilisation charts display against the values in public databases and in a paper published in 2025, then goes into preparing the chamber and the cleaning, which is the real subject as soon as a resin has been through.

1. What changes compared with a flower

A flower is a dry, fibrous material: air travels through it, and what it leaves behind is a dry plant dust. A resin is a concentrate of trichomes: heated, it softens, turns liquid and migrates. Placed straight onto the chamber screen, it goes through and reaches parts that do not come apart. That is the first difference, and it is mechanical before it is thermal.

The second comes down to density. A resin takes up far less volume than a flower for the same mass, and it does not let air circulate in the same way: with nothing to hold it, a ball of resin packs down and blocks the flow. The catalogue's families do not share the same texture or the same behaviour under heat either: a sifted powder such as dry sift is handled differently from a frozen hash, which is more supple and more greasy.

2. The published temperatures, and what they measure

Our vaporisation temperature tool shows the most quoted volatilisation points and offers three settings, 170 °C, 185 °C and 200 °C, within a stated useful range of 160 to 220 °C. Above about 230 °C combustion begins, which is precisely what vaporising sets out to avoid. The page makes clear that published sources spread over roughly ± 10 °C depending on the measurement method.

That caution deserves to be taken seriously, because the gap between sources is not only a matter of method: it is a matter of pressure. A paper published in 2025 in the Journal of Cannabis Research measured, by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, the normal boiling points of Δ⁹-THC and Δ⁹-THCV: 245 ± 6 °C for the first, 378 ± 4 °C for the second, against the commonly quoted values of 157 °C and 220 °C. The authors explain the gap: the widespread values correspond to distillations under reduced pressure, of the order of 0.05 Torr.

The same phenomenon can be read on the terpenes. Public databases give, at atmospheric pressure, 155 to 156 °C for α-pinene, 166 to 167 °C for myrcene, 175 to 176 °C for limonene and 198 °C for linalool, but 256 °C for β-caryophyllene, a very long way from the 119 °C that circulates in vaporisation charts.

What that table says fits in one sentence: a device setting is not a boiling point. Volatilisation is gradual, a compound starts coming off below its boiling point, and no setting targets a single molecule. 3. Preparing the chamber: screen, capsule, pad

Dedicated equipment exists, and it is what settles the running problem. Manufacturers offer a concentrate pad, a small fine-mesh steel piece that sits in the chamber and holds the material while it softens, along with dosing capsules that keep the load away from the body of the device. Failing that, common practice is to sandwich the resin between two layers of dry plant matter, which keeps it clear of the screen.

Two points of equipment are worth noting, quite apart from any setting. First, a clean screen to start with: a mesh that is already loaded saturates far faster with a resin than with a flower. Second, a fill that is not packed too tight, otherwise the airflow blocks within the first few seconds. Texture counts for more here than the micron printed on the packaging: a fine sifted powder goes through a standard mesh, a pressed resin does not.

4. Cleaning after a resin

Resin leaves a sticky deposit that hardens as it cools. Two actions are enough, at two different rhythms.

After each pass, the chamber screen is brushed dry, before it has cooled completely: the deposit comes away more easily warm than cold. That is also what heads off the most common symptom after a resin, a draw that tightens because the mesh is saturated.

Periodically, the removable parts are soaked in alcohol. The maintenance guides published for a common portable vaporiser give a soak of about 30 minutes, followed by a rinse in warm water and a full dry before reassembly. Seals and any electronic part stay out of the bath. An empty heating cycle, with the device reassembled and dry, finishes clearing any trace of solvent.

A word on the order of passes: a resin fouls more than a flower, and the logic of simple upkeep is to run it at the end of a session rather than before a dry material, so as not to clean twice.

5. What the batch certificate says about the material

The format changes nothing about the framework. The arrêté du 30 décembre 2021 (French order of 30 December 2021) authorises only varieties of Cannabis sativa L. listed in the catalogue, with a Δ⁹-THC content that is not above 0.30% (article 1, I), and applies the same ceiling of 0.30% to extracts and to the products containing them (article 1, III).

On a resin, the batch certificate brings two pieces of information useful to the equipment itself. The cannabinoid level, quantified by a third-party laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, situates how concentrated the material is, and therefore how much deposit to expect. The terpene profile indicates which molecules are actually present, and therefore which of the lines in the table above concern that particular batch: a batch with no limonene does not read like a batch that contains some.
