Buying CBD in a pharmacy: is it possible in 2026?

No CBD product holds a marketing authorisation or a Novel Food authorisation in France, according to the ANSM and EFSA. Without that double green light, CBD cannot be sold as a medicine, nor even as a conventional food supplement, in a pharmacy.

This absence of status explains why the pharmacies that historically offered CBD oils or capsules to be swallowed did so outside the framework of the medicine, relying on a food supplement status now called into question by the Novel Food regulation.

Since 15 May 2026, CBD products intended to be ingested without Novel Food authorisation have been withdrawn from sale, pharmacies included, according to the DGAL. This withdrawal affects food oils, capsules and any CBD product meant to be swallowed, whatever the outlet that offered it.

Cosmetics, e-liquids and CBD flowers are not covered by the food withdrawal of 15 May 2026, according to the DGAL. A pharmacy may therefore continue to offer CBD creams or balms, in compliance with the authorised cosmetic claims.

What is disappearing from the shelves, in pharmacies as elsewhere, are the formats meant to be swallowed without Novel Food authorisation: food oils, capsules, infusions or CBD chewing gums.

Sale in a pharmacy does not, in itself, add any further regulatory guarantee to a CBD cosmetic, since no medicine status applies. The quality marker remains the same everywhere: an independent certificate of analysis confirming the composition stated on the label.
