Moon rock CBD: what it is, what it is worth, and how to check before buying

Par ·

A CBD moon rock is a premium hemp flower coated in CBD extract or oil, then rolled in pollen or crystals. It is therefore a three-layer product, for which sellers announce very high CBD levels, often 50 to 70%, rarely backed by a publicly available analysis. In France it remains legal as a non-food product derived from the flower, below 0.3% THC. Here is how to understand it and, above all, how to check what is being sold to you.

Moon rock CBD: what it is, what it is worth, and how to check before buying

What a moon rock actually is

A moon rock is built in three steps: a base flower, a coating of CBD extract or oil, then a roll in pollen or CBD crystals. This layering concentrates the cannabinoids far beyond a plain flower, whose content sits rather between 5 and 25%.

The concept comes from the United States, popularised around 2013-2015 under the name "Kurupt's Moonrock". Legal CBD versions reached Europe around 2018. Today the word denotes a category, not a single recipe: quality depends entirely on the base flower and on the nature of the coating.

The advertised CBD levels: read them with caution

This is the point at which you need to keep a cool head. Sellers routinely announce levels of 30 to 80%, often around 50 to 70%. These are marketing figures, rarely backed by a publicly available certificate of analysis.

An advertised level is only worth something if it comes with a laboratory analysis you can consult. Without a certificate, the percentage remains a claim. That is precisely the logic we apply to every product: see our guide to buying quality CBD, which explains how to read an analysis report.

Prices observed in 2026

In France, moon rock sits roughly between 8 and 20 euros per gram in 2025-2026, depending on the advertised level and the quality of the base flower. Bulk offers sometimes go lower.

These ranges are indicative, drawn from commercial listings, not from any official index. They mainly serve as a benchmark for spotting the abnormal: a moon rock advertised at 80% CBD at a knock-down price is a warning sign, not a bargain.

Legality in France

Moon rock is legal in France as a non-food product derived from the hemp flower, below the 0.3% THC threshold. That legality follows from the framework set out by the Conseil d'État on 29 December 2022, which annulled the ban on selling flowers and leaves.

An important point: moon rock is not affected by the 15 May 2026 withdrawal of products intended for ingestion, since it is not a foodstuff. The applicable 0.3% THC threshold is the one set by the order of 30 December 2021.

Pitfalls to avoid

Vigilance is called for, all the more so as the bottom end of the market is risky. On 19 June 2025 the ANSM issued a warning about poisonings linked to products sold as CBD but containing synthetic cannabinoids or excess THC. A moon rock, being a processed and coated product, offers exactly the kind of surface behind which a dubious raw material can be hidden.

The warning signs are clear: a price too low for the advertised level, no laboratory analysis, no stated origin, and no verifiable reviews. Conversely, a serious product displays its analysis. Our CBD flowers and our resins, hash and pollen are laboratory-tested batch by batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is CBD moon rock?

It is a hemp flower coated in CBD extract or oil, then rolled in pollen or crystals. This three-layer structure concentrates the cannabinoids far beyond a plain flower, with advertised levels often between 50 and 70%.

Is CBD moon rock legal in France?

Yes, as a non-food product derived from the hemp flower, below 0.3% THC. It follows from the Conseil d'État framework of December 2022 and is not affected by the 15 May 2026 withdrawal of products intended for ingestion.

What is the real CBD level of a moon rock?

The advertised levels, often 50 to 70%, are commercial figures rarely verified by a publicly available analysis. Only a laboratory certificate you can consult tells you the real content. Without an analysis, the stated percentage remains a claim.

How do you spot a poor-quality moon rock?

Be wary of a price too low for the advertised level, the absence of a laboratory analysis, an unstated origin and unverifiable reviews. These processed products can hide a dubious raw material, as the ANSM warning of June 2025 pointed out.
