Moving from THC to CBD: a complete, practical guide
Par The Phytogrammes team ·
Moving from THC to CBD means understanding one essential difference: THC is psychoactive and illegal beyond minute traces, whereas CBD, which is not psychotropic, is legal in France below the threshold of 0.30 % THC in the finished product. The two molecules do not act in the same way and do not produce the same sensations.

Understanding the fundamental difference between THC and CBD
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the molecule responsible for the psychoactive effect of recreational cannabis. CBD (cannabidiol) does not have that effect and remains legal so long as the finished product contains no more than 0.30 % THC, a threshold confirmed by the Conseil d'État decision of 29 December 2022 (no. 444887). Anyone moving from THC to CBD should expect a different sensory experience, without the cannabis intoxication associated with THC.
Why some people make this transition
Motivations vary: a wish to stay within a clear legal framework, a desire to cut back a THC habit that has taken hold, or simple curiosity about hemp-based wellness products. Whatever the motivation, it is worth restating that CBD is not a treatment for THC withdrawal: no therapeutic claim of that kind is permitted in France, and medical support remains advisable where dependence is established.
Choosing a format suited to the transition
For someone used to smoking cannabis, a CBD flower to vaporise or infuse reproduces the consumption ritual without the THC, which sometimes makes the transition easier in terms of habit. For a more discreet, measured intake, CBD oil in drops allows the quantity consumed to be adjusted gradually. Our article on how much CBD to take sets out general usage benchmarks for an adult.
Avoiding the synthetic cannabinoid trap
Some products sold as "legal alternatives" to cannabis, based on HHC, H4CBD or THCP, long circulated in a grey area. They are now classified as narcotics by the ANSM orders of 2023-2024 and no longer belong to the legal market. Anyone genuinely wishing to leave THC behind should turn to certified CBD products, backed by a certificate of analysis, and not to these synthetic substitutes.
What the transition does not guarantee
Switching to CBD does not reproduce the sensations sought in THC consumption, and some people find the difference too pronounced to keep the transition going. There is no failure in changing your mind, but it helps to approach the subject with realistic expectations rather than with the idea of an equivalent substitute product. For a broader look at the differences between the two molecules, see our article on the differences between THC and CBD.
Frequently asked questions
Can CBD help you stop THC?
No therapeutic claim of that kind is permitted in France. CBD is not a withdrawal treatment: medical support remains the appropriate answer where there is dependence.
Can CBD cause you to fail a THC drug test?
A full-spectrum CBD product contains traces of THC below the legal threshold, which can in theory be detected depending on the sensitivity of the test. An isolate or a broad spectrum without THC reduces that risk.
Do you feel an effect when moving from THC to CBD?
The experience differs markedly: CBD does not have the psychoactive effect of THC. Some people report a general sense of relaxation, though that does not constitute an approved claim.
Should "legal HHC" products be avoided for this transition?
Yes. HHC has been classified as a narcotic in France since 2023 and is in no sense a legal alternative to THC or a compliant CBD product.
