CBD wax: understanding concentrates before you touch them

Wax is a cannabis concentrate with a waxy texture, obtained by extraction: it commonly titrates at 60 to 80% cannabinoids, where a flower contains 5 to 20%. In its CBD version, made from hemp compliant with the French threshold of 0.30% Δ⁹-THC, it is legal; in its THC version, it is one of the most heavily dosed narcotics on the market. This article explains how wax is made, what separates the two worlds, and the markers that distinguish a documented concentrate from a blind purchase.

What a wax is, and where its texture comes from

A wax is the result of an extraction: cannabinoids and terpenes are separated from the plant material using a solvent (butane, propane, ethanol) or by a solventless method (pressure and heat for rosin). The name describes the final texture, opaque and waxy, obtained by working the extract while the solvent is purged. Its cousins differ only in consistency: shatter is glassy, crumble is friable, budder is creamy.

This family of products took hold in the United States during the 2010s, to the point that American health authorities document "dabbing", the flash vaporisation of concentrates, as a consumption method in its own right, with dedicated work on its specific risks published as early as 2014.

THC wax, CBD wax: the same technique, two legal statuses

The extraction technique is identical; the raw material changes everything.

  • THC wax: extracted from narcotic cannabis, it concentrates THC to levels a flower never reaches. In France, it falls under the narcotics regime: production, sale and possession are offences.
  • CBD wax: extracted from hemp whose Δ⁹-THC does not exceed 0.30%, in accordance with the decree of 30 December 2021, it concentrates CBD and the minor cannabinoids. The finished product must itself stay below the threshold: this is the technically delicate point, because concentrating CBD also concentrates the residual THC. The effect follows the molecule: a CBD wax produces no intoxication, but delivers high doses of CBD by inhalation, which justifies starting low.

Butane extraction: why it is never reproduced at home

Part of the wax on the black market is produced by butane extraction (BHO, butane hash oil) in makeshift conditions. This point deserves to be stated bluntly: butane is a heavy, extremely flammable gas that accumulates at floor level in enclosed spaces. American emergency services have for years documented explosions and severe burns linked to amateur extractions, to the point that these accidents form a category of their own in burn-centre registries.

Professional laboratories work in closed-loop systems, with solvent recovery, a controlled atmosphere and vacuum purging validated by residual-solvent analysis. That last line, "residual solvents", is what to look for on the certificate of a solvent-extracted concentrate: it attests that the butane has been properly removed from the finished product.

How a CBD wax is consumed

Two routes dominate, and they are not equivalent:

  1. The concentrate vaporiser (or a hybrid vaporiser with a dedicated chamber): controlled heating, generally between 180 and 220°C, which preserves the terpenes and avoids combustion. It is the best-documented route, and our guide to vaporisation temperatures applies directly.
  2. The dab rig, the nail heated with a torch: the historical method, more brutal, where the actual temperature is rarely controlled. Too hot, it degrades terpenes and cannabinoids and produces irritant compounds.

In both cases, the rule for concentrates applies: starting quantities the size of a grain of rice. At 70% CBD, 0.1 gram of wax delivers as much cannabidiol as a whole gram of a 7% flower.

The markers of a documented concentrate

The reading grid is the same as for the modern hashes we have compared, with two extra lines specific to extracts:

  • Certificate of analysis for the batch: detailed cannabinoids, Δ⁹-THC below 0.30%, and for solvent extractions, the residual-solvents line.
  • Declared extraction method: CO2, ethanol, closed-loop hydrocarbons or solventless rosin. No answer is an answer.
  • Terpene profile: a wax purged at too high a temperature has lost its aromas; a published profile lets you check before buying.
  • Consistent appearance: a wax should be dry and workable, neither oily (incomplete purge) nor blackened (degraded material).

Frequently asked questions

Is CBD wax legal in France?

Yes, if it is extracted from compliant hemp and the finished product stays below 0.30% Δ⁹-THC, which can be checked on the batch's certificate of analysis. Wax made from narcotic cannabis remains illegal whatever its presentation.

What is the difference between wax, shatter and crumble?

The composition is comparable; only the texture changes, according to how the extract is worked during purging: glassy for shatter, friable for crumble, waxy and opaque for wax.

Does CBD wax get you high?

No. CBD is not psychotropic and the THC it contains is limited to the legal threshold. However, the high concentration calls for very small starting doses: the equivalent of a grain of rice is enough to gauge your reactions.

Why should butane extraction never be attempted at home?

Because butane is an explosive gas that accumulates in enclosed spaces: amateur extractions are a documented cause of severe burns and domestic explosions. Laboratories operate in closed-loop systems with controlled purging, which no home-made setup reproduces.
